This project has gone silent. With the increased cost of solar panels and construction, plus the community resisting this project, it has not started.
RWE Americas is planning to strip almost 980 acres of Van Zandt county land and install over 450,000 solar panels paid for with federal tax credits: your tax dollars. They want to sell the overpriced electricity to Oncor and cause your electricity prices to rise. The shell company for this project was created so that when this project fails, the parent company is free from obligation.
This project is located North of Wills Point, near Lake Tawakoni, between VZ CR 3808, VZ CR 3810 and FM 2475. It is scheduled to be almost 980 acres in size, with approximately 450,000 solar panels. They estimate on a perfect day, with perfect sunny weather, and the panels are completely clean, to generate 130 MW of energy.
RWE Americas is a subsidiary of the German company The RWE Group. Profits from this company, which are realized through state and federal tax credits, abatements, and subsidies (your tax dollars) end up in another country.
This is an industrial solar facility. Imagine seeing almost half a million of these panels every day as you drive north of Wills Point. Then, wondering what will happen to your land and livestock surrounding it. Contact your County Commissioners and ask them to oppose this project and protect the citizens of Van Zandt County. Then ask City of Wills Point officials, and the Wills Point ISD, to fight against this project that will put the burden on the backs of county residents outside of Wills Point! Their actions or inactions are important.
There is no guarantee of an adequate tax return to the county, safety of the surrounding property, or cleanup after the plant expires or is damaged. The only guarantee is that the German company behind this will make a big profit at the expense of Van Zandt County residents.
